The fabulous Manchester Palace Hotel has now been re-branded as The Principal Manchester.  I was fortunate to photograph the first event held in the newly refurbished venue.  The Heist Awards 2016 celebrate the best examples of University marketing in the UK and attract hundreds of delegates.  This was my third year photographing the awards.

They were hosted by Simon Bracewell, director of Havas People, and comedian Marcus Brigstocke.  The guests enjoyed a 1920’s themed evening with classic funfair games.

This was the first event to use the hidden street behind The Refuge, the refurbished restaurant at the hotel.  The new courtyard is ideal for outdoor chill-out space and is much quieter than you’d expect, given that it’s so close to a main road. It is shielded from the city noise by buildings on all four sides.

Photography Leeds – My day photographing The Queen & my visit to Buckingham Palace!

photography Leedsevent photographers Leedswedding photography Leeds

To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen becoming the longest serving monarch I was invited to take part in a series of interviews made by ITV Calendar.  The 2012 visit that I photographed is currently the last official visit to Leeds by The Queen & Duke of Edinburgh.event photography Leeds, royal photographer Leeds, Paula Brown photography

I’m a full time professional wedding & event photographer and was booked by Leeds City Council to capture the event for the city.

I’ve included some photos and a few of my memories of the day.  When I was initially told that I’d been recommended as the photographer for this event I just couldn’t believe it!  I was due to be on holiday in Wales on the day of the Queen’s visit, so I phoned my husband and told him we might have a holiday problem!

I knew that photographing a Royal visit would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for me as a photographer.  We decided that I would accept the booking and drive home from Wales alone the night before.

There were various conditions attached, for example, I couldn’t tell anyone I’d been booked at first!  The Queen’s itinerary is kept secret for as long as possible for security reasons.  The week before the visit I looked up photos of previous Royal visits to Leeds on Leodis.  I found images from 1908. It struck me then that whatever happened next in my photography career, this set of images from the 2012 visit would probably be the most viewed of any commission.

After the Royal visit ended I rushed home to start processing images, uploaded them to my online gallery, then drove all the way back to south Wales!  My images had to be submitted to the press office at Buckingham Palace to be approved, then be sent on to the Press Association to make their journey around the world. An interesting point to note is editing guidance is that The Queen should NOT be Photoshopped to change her appearance in any way. The photos must accurately represent what she looks like.

Her Majesty was incredible at smiling and being genuine with the crowds and people she met one to one. She seems to really enjoy meeting people.  Prince Philip was also amazing, he is really friendly and out-going. He tells lots of jokes and teases the crowds to make people laugh.

photography Leeds, Paula Brown photographerA few months later, I received an invitation to attend a Royal Garden party at Buckingham Palace. I took my husband, Nick.

Guests are not allowed to take cameras to Royal garden parties so we just took a few photos on Nick’s phone and swapped phones with other guests to get a few shots to keep.  The food & drinks were just what you’d expect: pretty white china cups & plates with an array of perfect little sandwiches and cakes.photographers Leeds, Ollievision Paula Brown, Bucking ham Palace  There were two military brass bands playing, one on each side of the garden. The Queen spent quite a while chatting to people, Prince Philip was there too, as well as various other Royals including Prince Andrew.

The Child Friendly Leeds “hand” logo was designed by Leeds graphic designer Andy Stoneman and the visit was used to launch the campaign.  Part of my brief was to capture images of the “hand” and children having fun.

Queens Hotel Leeds Photography – event photography in the Queens Ballroom

Queens Hotel Leeds Photography – event photographers LeedsLeeds wedding photography

I was invited back to one of my favourite venues, the fabulous Queens Hotel in Leeds, to photograph the 2015 Tenfold Awards.  This is one of the largest events at The Queens and fills their huge Queens ballroom to capacity.  Queens Ballroom and it’s two linked function rooms are the largest suites The Queens offers.  It is one of Leeds largest event spaces… certainly it’s one of the “go to” facilities for hosting elegant events & weddings in excess of 300 guests.

The Tenfold Awards celebrate the people and teams who work to help people with learning disabilities in Leeds.  It’s an amazing night out for people who really deserve it.  Several local celebrities supported the event, including some of the cast of Emmerdale.  The host for the evening was motivational speaker and trainer Ian Donaghy who also performed in the band as lead singer!

If you are hosting a wedding or event at The Queens please be demanding when inspecting any photographers portfolio!  This is a challenging venue, very dark with a 3 storey room height and coloured walls.  Ask for online gallery access to events photographed at The Queens to enable you to compare the work of any photographers you are considering booking.

If you have fewer guests don’t worry!  The Queens has 16 other conference and banqueting suites of all sizes. The Queens is a 1930’s art deco hotel and is situated next to Leeds railway station.  There is a temporary car park next to the hotel (drive past the hotel and it’s on the corner when you take the left hand filter to the station.)  Main parking is a multi-storey nearby at Leeds Station.  If you are staying as a guest you can pull your car onto the front loading area and check your luggage in with the concierge before driving to the car park.

Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg was speaker and attendee at the Northern Futures Summit in Leeds.  The venue was Aspire in the city centre, a short walk from the train station.  Delegates travelled from around the North of England to discuss the options about regional independence issues.

Aspire is a beautiful building that originally opened as Yorkshire Bank in 1894.  The interior was extensively refurbished and restored in 2007.
