Bramhope Puritan Chapel Photography – Leeds wedding photographers – wedding photography Bramhope
I recently photographed Bramhope Puritan Chapel which is a quaint little church in the North Leeds village of Bramhope. The Chapel is on the main road, tucked almost out of sight. If you look to the right as you drive north past the entrance to Britannia Hotel you’ll see the Chapel.
The reason for my visit is that, as recommended photographer for Britannia Hotel Leeds Bradford, I was able to take the keys and spend a little time there on my own to create a series of photos to show how the Chapel looks today. It was built in 1649 by Mr Robert Dyneley who owned Bramhope Hall. The Hall is long gone, the Brtiannia Hotel stands on the site now. There’s a gate from the hotel car park through to the chapel.
The Chapel was regularly used for worship until around 1881, when St Giles Church was built to accommodate the growing population of the village. The Puritan Chapel was Grade 1 listed when the UK register of listed buildings was created in the 1960’s.
A Chapel key is held at Britannia Hotel who have permission to use it for wedding blessings and photographs. It’s a unique addition to wedding packages at the Britannia!
The key gives a clue to the age of the chapel – it’s large and heavy, suggesting something magical lies behind the old wooden door. Once inside it seems quite dark until your eyes adjust to the light (and you find the light switches!) The walls are plain white, decorated with ornate carved memorials. At the rear of the chapel is the font, bearing a date of 1673.
The reclining lady in the top photo is a statue for the tomb of Esther, wife of Christopher Smith. The Smith’s purchased the estate from the Dyneley family in 1797.
The Chapel is owned by Bramhope & Carlton Parish Council who hold several public open days a year. See their website for further details.
If you’re interested in a wedding in Bramhope you can contact the Britannia Hotel for more details. Their venue is registered for civil ceremonies, with the Puritan Chapel being available for blessings and/or photographs. Church weddings in Bramhope are held at St Giles (C of E) and
